Reading Journal
Reader’s Journal -or- Literacy Journal -or- Reading Journal
Regardless of what you call it, the purpose of this journal is to record the thoughts and ideas students have about what they are reading.
Workshop is about becoming a strong, independent reader. The literacy journal is a vital tool in this, as it gives a developing reader a record of what they have read, what those reads were about, and what they thought about the reading.
Strategies for writing in the Reading Journal:
- Quick summary of important plot events
- Analyzing different characters
- Choosing interesting or difficult words and defining them
- Connecting what is read to what goes on in life
- Connecting what is read to other things the reader has read
