Writing Journal

Writing Journal -or- Writer’s Journal

The workshop classroom is a place for developing writers to experiment with many different ideas and styles of writing. In this journal, students write about anything that interests them. This journal is also used for drafting project-related writing.

Strategies for writing in your Writer’s Journal

  • A daily “diary” of what is going on in life
  • Ideas for creative fiction writing
  • “Lift-a-line” from a book or from previous journal entries
  • Writing off of an object - look at something and write about it
  • Revising previous journal entries, rought drafts, or project writing
  • “Drinking word soup” - Make a big list of words and write trying to use as many as you can
  • “Flash Fiction” - Write a story in exactly 350 words.
